FIRSTConsult

Focusing on the needs of the primary health care provider, this tool is well organized - providing a wealth information that is easy to navigate. The main components are:

Griffith's 5 Minute Clinical Consult

A quick reference for current medical diagnosis and treatment. Each disease or condition is described in outline form organized into 6 sections: basics, diagnosis, treatment, medications, followup, and miscellaneous.

eMedicine

Provides a wealth of information covering over 60 specialty areas. Each topic is peer-reviewed by four MDs and a Pharm D.  The content is created and maintained by approximately 8,000 contributing physicians. Includes many special features: images, tools (calculators, algorithms, etc.), even a diagram showing how to tie a bow-tie!)

ACP Medicine

  • Covers 15 subspecialties of internal medicine
  • Excellent graphics and illustrations
  • Approximately one third of the content is updated each year

Conn’s Current Therapy.

  • A reference book for the primary care physician looking for a quick and concise overview of current therapy for commonly encountered clinical problems. Arranged by organ systems. Also includes a sections on symptomatic care pending diagnosis and physical & chemical injuries (bites/stings/poisons).

Degowin's Diagnostic Examination

  •  This book is designed to assist the diagnostician in training or in practice with the process of making a diagnosis in which he or she takes a history, performs a physical examination, orders appropriate laboratory tests, and consults specialists for radiological and other procedures.

MedlinePlus

  • Full-text database created by the National Library of Medicine.
  • Contains disease and drug information for both the patients and health care 
    professionals.
  • Links to CDC and other helpful websites.

Physician’s Guide to Rare Diseases.

  • Print copy: REF WB 39 P578
  • A handbook covering diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 Americans. Each article provides a synopsis of the disease providing a general description, signs & symptoms, etiology, epidemiology, related disorders, treatments (standard & investigational), resources, and references.

Current Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment.

  • A reference book about diseases managed by surgeons. It includes diagnosis, disease processes, and treatment. Other aspects such as epidemiology and pathology are covered selectively. Information is also provided on such topics as: preparation for surgery, postoperative care, surgical complications, wound healing, inflammation, fluids & electrolytes, and nutrition.

Genes and Disease.

  • Genes and Disease is a collection of articles that discuss genes and the diseases that they cause. These genetic disorders are organized by the parts of the body that they affect. As some diseases affect various body systems, they appear in more than one chapter.
  • With each genetic disorder, the underlying mutation(s) is discussed, along with clinical features and links to key websites. You can browse through the articles online, and you can also download a printable file (PDF) of each chapter.

The Common Symptom Guide.

  • This reference book deals in-depth with symptom evaluation. It provides a list of pertinent questions, physical findings, and differential diagnoses for over 100 common adult and pediatric symptoms. For a web-based resource, try FIRSTConsult or eMedicine, which are listed above.
