- National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)
- "Established in 1988 as a national resource for molecular biology information, NCBI creates public databases, conducts research in computational biology, develops software tools for analyzing genome data, and disseminates biomedical information - all for the better understanding of molecular processes affecting human health and disease." (From the NCBI web site)
- LocusLink
LocusLink is designed to be a common access point to the sequence
data and descriptive information about a gene. It presents information on official nomenclature, aliases, sequence accessions, phenotypes, EC numbers, MIM numbers, UniGene clusters, homology, map locations, and related web sites.
When links are available for PubMed, OMIM, RefSeq, GenBank, HomoloGene, UniGene and variation data, they are indicated as small color-coded
blocks on the initial results screen. (Most, but not all,
potential PubMed or GenBank links are provided)
- Entrez
Databases (This page provides a good overview of the NCBI databases)
Entrez is a search and retrieval system that integrates information from databases at NCBI. These databases include nucleotide sequences, protein sequences, macromolecular structures, whole genomes, and MEDLINE, through
PubMed.
- GenBank
GenBank is the NIH genetic sequence database, an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences.
- Protein
Sequences
The protein entries in the Entrez search and retrieval system have been compiled from a variety of sources, including SwissProt, PIR, PRF, PDB, and translations from annotated coding regions in GenBank and
RefSeq.
- Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man - OMIM
OMIM is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders. OMIM
records provide descriptive information, references, links to
PubMed and Entrez sequences.
